  1. Don`t even try, you would be better to get a plasterer in and give it a skim over.  Much easier and less mess.

Write to the council and say that you are concerned that there is asbestos in the house.  They have a duty to get a contractor in and have it checked and if damaged they will have to either remove it or encapsulate it and make it safe.  Then re-plaster the walls and ceilings.

  2. http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/art...

Found this site, have a look, see what you think.

ps.. The chemical stuff is not cheap.

  3. I'm not a painter or decorator but i have removed artex from a number of ceilings and walls.

All i used was a wallpaper steamer and a wallpaper scraper. did the job a treat, tho very messy...hope this helps

  4. Elbow grease!!

You will have to scrape it off, it will take you hours as it is really tough stuff to remove.

  5. He's right there could be asbestos in it, some artex did contain it, you could then say well the paint could have lead in it, any way, you remove artex by using a professional wall paper stripper, these provide a higher rate of steam than a normal domestic one, you can hire these from any decent hire shop, the advantage of this is that it softens the artex and makes it wet, thus there is no dust to breath in so no problems from the asbestos if it is present, one thing pick it up before it goes hard again or else it will stick to anything it falls on.

Once you get started i comes off quite easy but it is a hard job.
