  1. The 40D is an upgrade to the 30D and they have made some improvements but nothing that will make a huge difference to most people.

The 5D however has a full frame sensor. Which means that the sensor is the same size as 35mm film. The other two cameras have a smaller or cropped sensor. This is why when buying lenses you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6 to get what the lens will perform as on the Rebels, 20D, 30D, and 40D.

The full frame will make for a much higher resolution image. The 5D is a professional model camera while the others are not.

  2. the 20D, and 30D are basicly the same camera 8.1MP. the difference is the LCD on the back (the 30D has a much larger LCD) and the internal software.  40D again is basicly the same camera as the 30D but has a 10.1MP sensor all three cameras have an APS size Sensor.

    The 5D is in a different class, it's a 12.1MP FULL-FRAME sensor.

the larger the sensor (pysical size) the less noise and better sesitivity (low light ability/higher iso's)  you get. higher MP's result in better resolution and ability to enlarge or crop.

Full-frame sensors do not have a lens crop-factor, where APS sensors crop lenses (20-40D have crop-factors of about 1.5x) if you had an 12mm lens on the 5D it is a 12mm lens but on the 20-40D it would be an 18mm lens (that's an issue if you like wide angle)

Canon is currently the leader in digital SLR cameras followed closly by nikon and distantly by sony.

DSLR's have all the same advantages that SLR's have
