why do the soldiers become "human animals" when they reach the front?

I like that book. That's basically the author's reoccuring theme of how the war dehumanizes the soldiers. They kill savagely, without feeling, like animals.

they have to get in the killing mode,some guys wont be coming back, Friends all of them.they block out all emotion reverting to a human animal! living and killing on instinct.
