  1. you could try with really small waves but you could always ask a surfer guy to help you out sometime. you'll meet other surfers and learn at the same time!

  2. go and surf i didnt start out with lessions and i was better then i thought i would be.

  3. Go ahead and do it.

Like they say, jump in the pool and U learn to swim...

  4. lessons run pretty cheap, like 25 bucks for a half day, and generally come with a board and a wetsuit. When I was learning, I took lessons, and they're a lot of fun.

I'll give you the same advice I give people who want to buy their first snowboard, rent it. That way, you wont waste $120-$200 (easily $300 for a snowboard) use it once then decide you don't like the sport.

Play around, have fun, and see how much you like it. Then buy a board and surf wherever the good spots you can find are.

  5. No you don't need lessons, but they will help a lot.

If you honestly can't afford a $25 lesson, go out and check out some surfers on the beach.  Ask them the "rules" or "etiquette" and they'll most likely help you out.

Don't ask them to teach you to surf, tell them you don't want to be in anyone's way so you just want to know what not to do.  Playing by the established rules generally makes far more friends than just going out and getting in everyone's way.  I've seen plenty of surfers offer to teach someone who is obviously not really clued in but also obviously trying not to get in the way of the experienced surfers.  I've also seen surfers beat the **** out of people who do get in their way.

Consider practicing on white water (after the wave breaks) on the inside of a break.  Talk to surfers, be open and honest about your skill level  (they'll be able to tell anyway) and pay attention.  Learn the lingo but don't be a poser and you should be fine.

  6. No don't worry, I've never had lessons before (only help from people who know how to surf- family, friends, etc.) and I know how to surf suprisingly well.  Like someon else suggested maybe surffing videos would help you. Once you learn to paddle hard enough to catch a wave all you have to do is stand up and steer. You would be fine without a surf lesson but you mght want someone out in the water to push you into a wave, and the person that does, doesn't even need to know how to surf.

By the way surf boards really aren't expensive. Nice quality used ones can range from $60-120. boards that are 300+ are the pices of customized boards. By the way if your really new to surfing buy a cheap long board ( soft top prefferably) and get to be able to surf really well on it.Then once you get really good, sell your long board and get a short board. I only reccomend a long board because short boards are not as boyant, hard to balance on, and just not very good first-timer boards.

  7. not realy cause if you you`ll be fallin off it all the time.

  8. go on youtube watch some how to surf videos then just go out there,  thats what i did and it worked for me.
