All set for the 23rd edition of Jayco Bay Cycling Classic 2012
Jayco Bay Cycling Classic is held every year on January 1st but the 2012 track is considered to be the fastest as compared to all the previous editions. The 2012 version of the race will begin from the Ritchie Boulevard at Geelong’s Eastern Beach,
extending up to two kilometres throughout the botanic gardens.
John Trevorrow, the race director, told Cyclingnews, "I had to really look at what we were going to do, I don't like it [the new circuit] as much as a visual because it's a bit bigger and you don't see it all”.
The track has been revised and the new circuit is 1.3 kilometres longer than the previous year’s track.
John believes that the coming season's race will be the best as compared to all the previous versions.
He mentioned that the highly challenging race will make victory more precious and only the strongest of the riders will be able to get through.
Trevorrow briefed, "It's still going to be a great finale because it's going to be a very tight corner, one you have to brake for so they get around that and there's a little dog leg up to the finish so it will be an exciting finish, It's still a tough circuit
but it will still be a case of only the strongest survive".
Initiated in 1989, Jayco Bay is a stage race that lasts for four days.
Australia’s former sprinter, Robbie McEwen, won the race for a record number of 7 times. On the other hand, Glen Clarke and Mark Renshaw won the race 3 and 2 times, respectively.
The women’s event of the race started in 1994 and Katy Watt won the first two editions.
Team GreenEdge will make its debut appearance at the 23rd edition of Jayco Bay Cycling Classic, it has already applied for its UCI Pro Tour license.
Winner of 2007, Mark Renshaw’s inclusion has not been confirmed yet.
The favourites of the race this year will certainly be Rochelle Gilmore and Matt Goss, as both won the race in 2002 and 2011.
The 23rd edition of Jayco Bay Cycling Classic is more challenging as compared to previous years. All the participants are looking forward to the exciting event, scheduled to take place at the beginning of next year.
