  1. declawing is meen,

we taught out cat not to do that,  we yell at him and he stops...  some times you can swirt him with a spray bottol of water but my cat doesnt care..   he jumps in the tub/sink then crys for water...

  2. Her scratching on things doesn't mean she is stupid. If she is a barn cat you don't want to declaw her. She has too be able to fight off her enemies. Scratching is a natural thing for cats. Try looking into training programs.

  3. put DOUBLE SIDED tape to the areas ur cat is clawing!!!! they hate it! do not dclaw ur cat, how would u like to have ur fingers cut off? it'd b the same thing

  4. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont declaw!

There is a simple solution for this!!! www.softpaws.co.uk  Its artificial nails you stick on your cats claws, no pain, takes 5 minutes, and she can go on clawing stuff like carpets and get her pleasure out of it, but the claws are soft tipped now and she will not be able to damage anything! Please please please dont declaw. Pain hurts! Dont declaw!

  5. First of all, please do not declaw.

1.Especially because she is a barn cat, how will she defend herself without claws? She'll be scratched and attacked to death without any protection.

2.Declawing is inhumane. Instead of taking the claws out , the take the "fingers" and everything else out to the knuckle! Also, declawing is expensive.

Here is some info on scratching:http://www.perfectpaws.com/scratch.html

Here is some general cat training info:http://www.perfectpaws.com/cpv.html

Hope this helps!☺ If you need any help feel free to email me.

    God bless

Note: One thing about soft paws: They would be fine for an indoor cat, but how is a barn cat suppose to defend itself?

Also, the ideas of cat nip and lemon spray is a wonderful idea! Thumbs of to you guys!

  6. taking claws from cats is wrong, you need to spray some tuna oil on the post thing to get it intereted in it, then it will learn not to claw your furnuture leave tuna bit by the claw post, as cats will hang around for food, this will help change the habit because the cat wont get a reward on the furniture but will get something when at the post, do this for a couple of weeks, and it will probly sort it out!!!!!!

  7. Why is everyone against declawing a cat!

I have 2 cats and both of them are all 4 paw declawed.  I paid for a laser treatment.  It cost about 1,000 for both cats.  All they did was zap their claws with a laser, it kills the never, and after about a week the nails just fall out.  It's completely painless and there is no recovery time for my cat.  My cats dont exactly have brains they are getting smarter.  You train them like you train a dog, you raise your voice, snap your fingers and have patience.  My cats now know what DOWN means and what NO means and what STOP means.  I say those commands and snap my fingers and they stop immediately.  I have both cats tear up 2 brand new leather couches, brand new carpet, a brand new recliner, and a brand new comforter.  The Claws went.  You can get a cat declawed for about 300.00 if you do it the traditional way...that usually includes vet stay.

  8. That doesn't mean she is dumb, cats are harder to train than dogs, maybe try to find a cat trainer or get a book, the cat will act up more if it thinks you don't like it

  9. Time and patience is your answer, please don't declaw.  Keep clipping her claws, if you are not familiar with clipping your vet will be happy to show you.  You may need to try a different type of scratching post, some cats actually prefer a section of an actual tree with lots of bark attached to a base.

You don't mention her age, but the young ones grow out of the "badness" stage quite quickly and usually understand with a squirt of a water bottle that the behavior is not allowed.  The cat is not really being "bad", but more like a child who does not understand good or bad behavior and needs to have boundaries.  Never hit or yell at a cat.  We have a kitten now who needed two squirts with the water bottle to understand that the dining room table was off limits.

Barn cats are usually extremely smart and given time to adjust to her new surroundings, I think you'll soon be impressed with her intelligence.

Now make sure she is up to date with her inoculations and schedule an appointment to have her spayed.

    Good Luck!

  10. When we first got our cat she killed our furniture clawing. We had her front claws removed only which helped alot! I know some people thing its cruel but it pays off in the end! I dont remember how much it was exactly about 9 years ago, I think it was about $150. You should def get it done though.

  11. PLEASE DON'T DECLAW YOUR CAT!

Training is easy .... spray the things she scratches (or very near to them) with anything that smells of citrus - especially lemons ...... spray the things YOU WANT her to scratch with a catnip spray (or place some catnip in these areas) .... catnip is a mint that cat's die for!  You'll soon have a far more social cat who's most certainly chilled out!  Peace Man!

    :)

  12. Don't declaw your cat!! It's very inhumane and is illegal is many places outside of America. Cats rely on their claws for self defense but also for basic things such as running and balance.

When training a cat keep in mind that a cat doesn't really care for rewards and will react VERY badly to punishment but they do care what you expect of them (even if they don't show it) If your cat is clawing your furniture it's because she doesn't know that you expect her not to (and why should she, the furniture, carpet and scratching post are all the same from her point of view)

I'm assuming you don't know why cats need to claw at things or require a scratching post. It's not just because they're bored or destructive. Cats scratch trees (or our couches now that they're domesticated) in order to remove the top layer of their claws. They shed the top laying of claw often because as they run or climb their claws become less sharp and it's important that they keep them as sharp as possible. Cats also have sent glands on their paws so it's a way for them to mark their territory. It's natural and not something your cat can help and it's important not to treat her like she's doing something wrong but just let her know that she's doing something right in the wrong place.

Assuming she is over a year of age she should respond to catnip so buy a bottle of catnip spray and spray it on the scratching post. However, don't do this is she's under one year old because not only will it not effect her but it'll desensitise her to catnap in the future.

Another alternative is to buy products to put on your furniture to deter your cat from scratching them. I've seen in a lot of pet shops a clear roll on sheet product that you can put on that doesn't leave a mark and is not very visable that cats HATE to put their claws on but I don't remember what it is called.

Another very important note is to not put her next to the scratching post and place her paws on it. A lot of people do this thinking it will help but it does quite the opposite. (put your paws on it to show her how, sure, but not her paws!)

I hope this helps and I beg you to not declaw your cat. Google the subject and you'll understand why I am so against it.

  13. DONT DECLAW!!!

In england, its ILLEGAL. Thats for a reason. There are a lot of idiots who say "Nooo declawing is fiiiine". It isn't. If it was, then why would it be illegal in england?? Its inhumane. Especially since your cat is a barn cat, it must be an outdoor cat. If another cat , or a fox or a dog, fights with it (and this is inevitable), well...you better start planning her funeral. If you're going to declaw her you may as well chop her head off now, it would be less painful.

For gods sake trim her nails. That will lessen the damage. Oh and just so you know, pretty much every single cat in the world scratches, smart or otherwise. Thats their instinct. Of course she doesnt use her scratching post. They never do.

Next time she scratches the furniture or wall, spray her with a spray can full of water, pick her up and put her next to the scratching post and pretend to scratch it. This is how we litter trained our cat, and we used the same method for teaching it how to scratch on the post.

Ignore crystal.ann02 and theinfamousskittles or anyone else who says its good to declaw your cat.

Any sane vet will tell you it isnt.

Its the cruellest and most painful thing you can put a cat through. They cannot use annaesthetic to make the cat fall asleep because they are worried they would use too much and the cat could die. So the cat feels his nails being taken off. Its awful. The only people who have their cats declawed are those who hate their cat with a burning passion or are incredibly incredibly stupid and do not have a brain.

  14. don't declaw the cat. That is their defense system in case something attacks them. On the scratching post, rub some cat nip into the post, kitty will love smelling the catnip and start using it more and more. Keep adding catnip until the kitty knows this is where to scratch. If she is scratching else where, rub some Cayenne pepper into the location. Cats can't stand the smell. If they do scratch there, it will get on the paws and they will get a taste of it. It won't harm them but they won't like it at all and will avoid the area.

  15. I have a 100% indoor cat, and I didnt declaw her (thats cruel)

I just use the nail clippers to keep them dull....no scratching
