Alright, so im planning on taking violin lessons. I've played the piano for about 9 years, so I know theory and how to sight read. I also have been playing the flute for three years now. I'm 14, and have read on the internet that this age is a little late for learning the violin. I was also wondering about how long it takes to prefect vibrato, bow movement and all the other violin techniques. Approximately, how long will it take for me to get a good sound? Also, which type of violin would be best for me and are there any additional things i will have to purchase- like rosin? Or a stand? Is there anything else i will need to know?

  1. My sister, who majored in cello, told me that it would take me 10 years to learn how to play the violin well -- great bowing, tone, vibrato. Like you, I studied piano and flute first.

Unlike you, I never got around to violin lessons, and have always been sorry. Please don't worry about being too old. You have terrific music knowledge from 12 years of flute and piano - what a great background!

Your teacher will tell you, at the first lesson, all the things you'll need to buy. He/She may prefer a particular type of rosin. You'll need a stand, but that would probably be for home -- your teacher should have one for you.

Hopefully some violinists will also chime in here. Best of luck to you. Making music is so wonderful!
