  1. I am not a ranger, but I knew many when I was in the Army.  You can go to the Ranger Training Brigade website https://www.benning.army.mil/rtb/rtbmain... to get a good idea what it is all about.  Click on the "benning phase" "mountain phase", and "florida phase" links.  The descriptions are pretty dry, though.  The description of the darby phase, for instance, fails to mention that the ranger candidates are made to do pushups, and flutter kicks, and other exercises for hours every day.  Also understand that most of this training is conducted on minimal sleep and food.  It is typical for a soldier to lose 25 pounds during the 2 to 3 month course (often solders have to repeat a part of the course).  Part of that is muscle.  I have seen soldiers return from ranger school only being able to do half as many pushups and situps as they could do before.  You can imagine what you have to put your body through to eat 1200 per day, do pushups and other exercises and carry 50+ pounds around all day, and actually lose muscle tissue.

All in all, it is probably not the hardest program in the army or the military in general to pass, but given how long and grueling it is, it is probably the toughest or the second toughest for those who are going through it.  About one third to one half of those who began the course in the last several decades failed (depending on where you get your information).  That is a higher pass rate than courses like the ranger Indoctrination program (RIP), the "delta force" selection program, and the SEAL's BUDS program.  The majority of candidates wash out of those other courses (the vast majority in the case of the "delta force" program).  Of course, the preparedness and determination of the candidates varies between those different courses.

Keep the following in mind too:

You have to attain the rank of specialist or corporal (E4) before submitting an appliction to go to Ranger School itself.

Most Rangers are not part of the Ranger Regiment.  It is extremely unlikely that you will get into the Ranger Regiment unless you volunteer for it before you enlist and get it in your enlistment contract.  If you are an enlistedman, you must pass RIP before getting into the Regiment.  Most of those who enlist to join the Ranger Regiment only go to ranger school after 1 or 2 years in the regiment  (they must be promoted to specialists, they must be ready physically, and they must wait their turn).  Most of the young officers in the regiment went to ranger school as west point cadets, were selected for the regiment, and then had to pass the ROPE program (sort of a RIP for sergeants and officers).

Becomng a green Beret is a differnet thign entiretly, but it has many of the same basic requirements as ranger school, and many green berets volunteer for ranger school either before or after joining special forces.
