All-time NBA disappointing teams (Part 3)
Charles Blake claimed during his career God wanted his team the Phoenix Suns to win the championship. The 1993 season saw this player win the MVP award and was also the pick of the lot to win the NBA title. However, the Suns lost the game to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. They lost both game 1 and game 2 of the series. This also made them the first team to lose the NBA finals opening games at home. The Suns tried to crawl their way back into the title hunt and managed to pull off two out of three games but then Jordan stepped on the gas and the title was taken away from the hands of the Suns. The following season saw Blake try harder and with Jordan out of the scene it gave him the chance to win the title. After establishing a 2-0 lead against the Houston Rockets, he was really confident that the Suns would win the title.
But this was to be proven wrong as they lost again. This unfortunate era continued for the Suns as they lost another title hope in 1995. Blake and the Suns had a 3-1 lead over the eventual champions.
Continuing in the lines of Blake, Steve Nash made it possible for the Suns, as he guided his team to a regular season with statistics of 62-20. They became the number one seed in the Western Conference and the fans saw the hope that after the days of Blake it might be time that his hard work paid off and they win a title. After having an excellent playoff season, the only thing that defeated the Suns was their defence that worked against them and once again they lost. The Spurs used their firepower at the right time and it paid off by weakening the Suns defence that shattered the hearts of many fans who saw a glimmer of hope that they might win the title this season.
Experts say that Miami Heat have brought in LeBron James who is not only a talented player but knows how to deal with everyone after failing and keeping the morale high. The 2009 Cleveland Cavalier team is going to be talked about here, which had all the potential to become the champions with the MVP award won by LeBron that year and had two NBA All-Stars in the squad. The Cavs came up with dominating performances, while playing on home court maintaining a record of 39-2. Some analysts say that Cavs team was the greatest that they had seen and without a doubt had more than enough to bring home the crown. The expectations became greater when the Cavs were able to go past the first two rounds of the playoffs with dominance. But when they came up against the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Final, they were simply punished by the Magic’s superstar centre, Dwight Howard. Although James averaged a humongous 38.5 points per game during the series but his team was manhandled every way. And the Cavs crashed out surprising many and some didn’t even believe their eyes.
The top of the list for the most disappointing team is occupied by the 2007 Dallas Mavericks team. The previous year saw them blow a 2-0 Finals lead to Miami and this year the experts predicted they would come up with better performances. The Mavs also came up with dominating performances and in a season their star player Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP award. They also came up with the record of 67-15. When the Mavs were able to make it into the playoffs they proved that matches are never won paper as they were way better than the Golden State Warriors. They lost the series 4-2, previously defeating them three times. This according to experts was the biggest shocking and disappointing result in the history of the franchise.
