  1. Yes, I used a fish tank heater to keep it at the correct temperature, I also transferred the brew from 1 vat to another, 24 hours before bottling to reduce sediment.

  2. My father used to use an aquarium thermometer and also a heater as it is more accurate when brewing any sort of grog

  3. Presently I use a converted refrigerator. I bought an old refer second-hand and an external temperature controller or thermostat. I bore a hole through the side of the refer box and attached the thermostat to the inside wall. Now it is just a matter of placing my fermentor inside the "fermentation room" setting the temp. and let it go.

There are other methods such as a water bath. Using cold water or ice water added as the cooling method.

For ales most cellars have perfect fermentation temp. throughout the year.

If I get some extra cash some day I will purchase of the temp. controlled fermentation vessel. They have a cooling jacket welded to the metal body of the fermentor with of course control for the temp.

  4. I haven't made any.  But what my friend would do is put it in a extra bathroom tub in the basement that no one uses.  Dry and cool, which is what I think is what you need.  But I don't know for sure, but it works for him all the time

  5. I only brew ales, which basically ferments at room temperature.

I keep it in a place in my house away from a window, so it does not get direct sunlight. My house doesn't really get too hot or too cold, so my brew stays at an acceptable temperature.

  6. you can buy a cover it has an heater in it for winter time the heat has a lot to do with fermentation, the temp from memory should not be less than 24 and no higher than 28. test it with a thermometer daily.

Any home brew shop will sell them. the fish tank heater would be ok if you can set it to the heat between 24/28,

  7. we kept our carboy in a room against an outside wall. worked fine for the beer & the wine

  8. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

  9. I use a belt heater and a thermometer that sticks to the fermenter.

  10. Put the brew into an old fridge or freezer that seals well, for a steady gentle heat hang a 40 watt light inside, a bit above connected to a thermostat set at the right temp for your brew. I recycled bits of an old electric blanket for my uncle who swears by the system.

  11. By boyfriend sits one of those heat  pads under the keg when brewing.

It plugs into wall and keeps it at the right temp.
