Alla Kudryavtseva advances at Monterrey Open with a breadstick
Russian, Alla Kudryavtseva, upset 3rd seeded French wild card, Aravane Rezai with a breadstick. She registered 6-2, 6-1, win against the French at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open on Monday.
World ranked 70th, Kudryavtseva has so far won only 3 out of her last 10 matches in the season. She lost in the first rounds at Brisbane, Memphis, and at the Australian Open Grand Slam while seeing a second round exit at Hobart before losing to
8th seeded German, Angelique Kerber.
World number 23, Rezai hasn’t been very active this season as she just played in only two tournaments before coming here. She lost to Czech, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, in the first round of the Australian Open and lost to Serbian qualifier, Bojana Jovanovski,
in the second round at Sydney.
In the opening set of her first match here, the Russian completely outplayed Rezai. The French woman saved one break point, fired an ace and had a higher first serve percentage of 52 percent as compared to Kudryavtseva’s 48 percent.
But she committed many unforced errors and three double faults. The Russian, on the other hand, registered an impressive 82 percent win on her first serve. She hammered 3 aces, saved the only break point and broke Rezai’s serve twice to win the first set
convincingly with a 6-2 score line.
The Russian maintained her winning momentum from the first set as she kept all of her serves and broke Rezai’s serves three times to win with a breadstick.
The French player seemed devastated after the first set defeat and showed no enthusiasm in this set as she committed even more unforced errors and produced six double faults. She was only able to win a single match and her first serve percentage of 54 percent
was much lower as compared to the Russian’s 75 percent. While Kudryavtseva clinched the set by firing 2 aces and by earning an amazing 73 percent win on her first serve.
"Aravane didn't play her best tennis today, but I'm happy with the way I handled myself," Kudryavtseva said. "It feels nice to win this match. It's the first big upset for me this year. I played her before and lost, so I'm happy with the outcome".
After winning this match, Kudryavtseva has now levelled her head to head score with the French by 1-1.
The 23 year old Russian will next be facing eitherBelarusian, Olga Govortsova, or, Czech, Renata Voracova.
