Allan Burnett shines as New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles 7-4 – MLB Update
Allan Burnett pitched a brilliant five shut-out innings as New York Yankees beat Baltimore Orioles 7-4 at Yankee Stadium, New York on Wednesday, April 13.
It seems the postponement of game due to heavy rain was a blessing in disguise, as the Yankees displayed a magnificent performance to beat Baltimore, making it the third loss for the Orioles in a row. Allan Burnett, the shining starting pitcher for the Yankees,
had strong enough reason and backing to pitch five shut-out innings, rendering the Orioles virtually powerless to go for a hit against him. If vulnerabilities alone did not afflict the Orioles batting line, the runs that New York had piled up were enough to
allow Burnett to monopolise the game.
The game kicked off with the Orioles’ Brian Roberts facing Burnett who came out to pitch for the Yankees. Burnett was unplayable and he unleashed his fastball, literally incapacitating the Orioles’ batters. Nick Markakis, Derek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero
were unable to play Burnett.
Alex Rodriguez charged Chris Tillman, who was pitching for Baltimore and hit a three-run homer to right-field as Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira scored. A 3-0 lead in the very first inning was a stun of astonishment for the Orioles. This time it was Jeter
who scored a single on Tillman’s fastball by reaching on an infield single as Russell Martin scored. Robinson Cano did not remain left behind, as he added a two-run double so Jeter and Teixeira scored, taking Rodriguez to third and getting a 6-0 lead by the
second inning.
Chris Jakubauskas, who came out to pitch for Baltimore was targeted by Jorge Posada in the fifth inning, as he homered to right to score the seventh run for the Yankees. By then Baltimore had not even opened their account. The Orioles were probably waiting
for an auspicious moment to make a come-back in the game. They found this opportunity in the seventh inning when Matt Wieters and Brian Roberts, each hit two-run homers. Wieters homered to right as Mark Reynolds scored and Roberts homered to right, as Robert
Adriano scored. While the fans were intrigued momentarily, no major hit then followed.
Rafael Soriano came to pitch for New York in the eighth and Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, none of them allowed the Orioles to score. Rivera sealed the victory for the Yankees in the 9th inning when Wieters, Robert Andino and Roberts could
only see the ball coming, unable to strike it for a hit.
