Allan James Burnett to defend do-or-die situation – MLB preview
A.J. Burnett is all set to help the New York Yankees stay alive in a must win situation in Game 4 against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Michigan.
Recent events have taken a real twist, as the Yankees needed to grab the fourth outing, to take part in the fifth, as fate has brought Burnett in the contest with the Tigers young-but-solid Rick Porcello.
An 11-11 starter with an expensive 5.15 ERA still has to remove all the allegations he received throughout the season. An objection of being an unproductive member of the squad, popular for holding game brilliance, will be his added enemy in one of the biggest
challenges of his career. He not only has real trouble from his opposition but also from his fans, who have associated their high hopes with him.
However, his ambition to make the best of his career, made him neglect all the criticism, instead he encountered praise for his previous progress.
"Believe it or not, I've got pretty good confidence every start," said Burnett, "I try to go out and believe I can throw a no-hitter. Even last year, when I couldn't get out of the first inning, I still took the mound with belief, and I did so this year."
Burnett has 173 strike-outs in 32 starts but the major problem he had to cope with is his high count of walks. He holds the second position in American League in walks with 83. He allowed 190 hits and 115 runs are also at his back to be cleaned away in the
most crucial outing of this season.
However, his post-season performance has been chasing him. He has 1-2 with a 5.67 ERA in six playoff starts and it will be his best chance to improve his record.
Burnett also has to justify his call back as he was initially pushed out of the post-season games. However, Friday’s suspension forced Girardi to reconsider his starter and made him go with four starters. Yankees’ fans will now hold their breath until the
game starts and all nine innings are finalised.
Burnett has given a positive message to all of the Yankees’ fans.
"You can't count me out," Burnett said on Monday. "I'm going to bring everything I've got and just let A.J. loose out there."
Porcello, who is enjoying his career high 14-wins and ended September with a solid 3.55 ERA, will be looking to make his mark in Michigan. The 22-year-old will have his parents in the stands while he makes his first post-season start for the Tigers.
The Yankees’ biggest bats are still cold and it will add difficulty for Burnett and some relief for Porcello. Alex Rodriguez and post-season hero Derek Jeter are still quiet during this series, as all the fans are looking for them to start something special.
It will be an interesting clash of two top pitchers in Game 4 between the Yankees and the Tigers. The game looks like it will be a true test to see which team has some solid depth to their line-ups. With the Yankees’ offence struggling, Detroit has a very
good chance to take them down. However, the Yankees have a tremendous batting line-up which is just itching to fire and put in a brilliant performance against the Tigers. Only time will tell which team has the fortitude to fight it out and prevail in the end.
