Allan James Burnett wins 2011 season challenge – MLB Update
Allan James Burnett has answered every criticism raised against him over his selection to start the New York Yankees most important outing of the 2011 season against the Detroit Tigers, at Comerica Park of Michigan.
A young-energetic pitcher was facing tons of criticism, from all side of the country and his abilities were questioned. An allegation over his capacity as a pitcher to remain a part of the Yankees’ camp has now been answered with full power. The game was
being considered a 2011 season challenge for Burnett.
Burnett knocked down all the batters he faced in his first three innings and held the Tigers scoreless. The scoreboard in the do-or-die outing was unturned until the top of the third inning and without having any runs at his back, Burnett was constantly
dealing with the Tigers’ powerful in-form batting squad.
His struggle was backed up with an RBI double in the top of the third inning, when Jorge Posada, Russell Martin and Derek Jeter combined to grab a 2-0 lead against the young Rick Porcello. This hit provided Burnett a little room to experiment but his techniques
went wrong, as he threw four walks over the span of just over five innings.
After Burnett worked more than five innings and gave away only a single run over four hits and four walks, Girardi realised the pitch count has increased to the limit and now Burnett may commit some mistakes. Girardi stopped Burnett after he allowed a single
to Don Kelly in the bottom of the sixth inning and handed the ball to Rafael Soriano.
It was a gamble, as Soriano had given a game losing homer in Monday’s match-up. However, this time he was backed up with strong batting swings. Soriano completed the sixth and carried his no-hitter game to the seventh to provide the Yankees bat room for
more runs. Soriano struck out one batter and handed the ball to Phil Hughes in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The top of the eighth was the best of the entire outing, in which the Yankees scored six runs to increase their lead to a 10-1 indisputable lead. Hughes closed down the eighth and Boone Logan worked a hitless ninth to cement the Yankees much-needed win.
