Allan Jones Burnett struggles in New York Yankees 6-4 win over Minnesota Twins – MLB Update
Allan Jones Burnett failed to make a mark in the New York Yankees 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in the solo game played at Yankee Stadium on Monday, September 19.
In the 92nd win for the Yankees, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera dominated, but 34-year-old veteran starter Burnett failed to impress his manager Joe Girardi.
Burnett was given a chance against the weak Minnesota Twins to help him get his impetus back. Burnett has lost 11 games out of 31 starts but the Yankees could not afford such a shaky performance in the post-season.
12-years veteran pitcher started with solid pitches in the first three innings of the outing. However, his nightmare outing started in the fourth, when the Twins’ Chris Parmelee sent his two strikes pitch into the stands over the right-fielder. He allowed
two more hits in this inning.
Burnett struggled to stabilise his pitching technique in the next inning and was tagged for four hits including a home-run. Michael Cuddyer of the Twins, blasted one over centre-field to cut the Twins deficit to 5-3 in the fifth, before manager Joe Girardi,
replaced him with Cory Wade.
"I think my curveball was not as aggressive in the strike zone after the third inning," Burnett said. "It allows hitters to sit on fastballs."
Burnett might have send the outing into the Twins’ court, if Joe Girardi hds not taken the right decision at the right time. However, Cory walked and then permitted a hit allowing the Twins to reduce their deficit to 5-4. This hit dropped Burnett to nine
hits and four earned runs over more than four innings. It elevated Burnett’s ERA to a 5.28 in the 2011 regular season.
"He was great for three innings," Girardi said. "He kind of lost his slot, is what seemed to happen. He ended up getting out of that fourth inning with only giving up the one run. But then he got in trouble again in the fifth, and I just felt it was time
to make a change."
Yankees now have to face the tough Tampa Bay Rays and Burnett might have to toss in one of these outing. However, he will have to make his best effort to support Carsten Charles Sabathia and Ivan Nova, who will start the opening outing.
