AC Milan manager, Massimiliano Allegri, is pleased to see his team qualify for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after surviving a scare from Arsenal.
The Rossoneri cruised to an emphatic 4-0 win in the first-leg at San Siro, and looked in a comfortable position to qualify for the quarter-finals. However, Arsenal showed real venom in their attack in the second-leg, and almost
pulled off a stunning comeback. After being 3-0 at the break up in the return-leg, the Gunners looked set to dismantle the Rossoneri. However, they could not trouble the scorers in the second-half at Emirates Stadium, and went onto lose 4-3 on aggregate score.
Allegri is ruing his team’s performance of the evening, stating that they suffered from playing three strikers. The tactician admitted that he got the tactics wrong for the match, and insists that Milan played well in the second-half.
The 44-year-old revealed that after a dreadful first-half, he told his player’s to go out with a new mind set after the break. The former Cagliari manager is relieved to see that his team has qualified for the last eight, and believes
that had they been knocked-out, it would have been a huge psychological blow for the Italian Champions.
While talking to the reporters, Allegri said:
“We played with three forwards and certainly suffered too much. We conceded on the first corner and that made a big difference psychologically, then we made too many mistakes in our midfield passes.”
“I did not see the team afraid as such, as there are experienced players here. In the locker room I simply told them we had to wipe out the first half from our memories and start from 0-0. In any case, I am not too worried. It
was a crucial game and would’ve been a truly massive psychological blow for the rest of the season if we’d gone out from 4-0 in the first leg.”
Milan have qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first-team since their European triumph in the 2006/07 season.
