Allen McGee gets into contention at the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship
Allen McGee carded a three-under par 69 in the opening round of the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship and shared the fifth spot on the leaderboard on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.
McGee recorded two birdies each before and after the turn against a lone bogey on the front nine to settle three strokes behind the pace set by Alex Carrigan.
It was a great start for the Kanata resident, as he teed off in the tournament after around three decades. Therefore, it is a good chance for him to make his return memorable through a consistent display of the game in the remaining rounds.
Despite having a three-stroke deficit after the opening round, he is confident to make a good run and steal the show in the end.
According to him, one cannot win the event with a stunner in the opening round. In fact, it requires more than just the first round performance to raise the winning trophy at the end of the final hole of the tournament.
He said that a player can definitely lose the tournament if he performs poorly during the first round.
Therefore, he is in a strong position if looked at the leaderboard, as there are only four players who scored better than him on Tuesday.
“You can’t win the tournament on the first day, but you certainly can lose it,” he said. “I don’t want to say I could have been 6-under, but I felt like a I left a lot of shots out there. I could have made a few more putts”.
“I kept the ball in play. I had lots and lots of looks at birdies so I was comfortable all day, he added.
“I didn’t make a lot of putts. I have no complaints because I felt like I was playing great. I’m very pleased. Yes, I could have been lower, but I think I’m in a great spot. I anticipated four 69s would be a great number to shoot for the week, so I’m on
pace”.
McGee also told that he decided to participate in the tournament only because it was scheduled in Ottawa. His decision has already started to pay him back.
