Allen Weik captures Men’s 1650yard freestyle title: Day four – NCAA Division 3 Championships
Allen Weik of DEN captured gold medal of the Men’s 1650yard freestyle on last day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 3 Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, March 24.
Weik remained considerably ahead of his strongest challenger, Drew Ledwith of KEEN throughout the distant freestyle swim. With his unbelievable efforts, he enjoyed an advantage of more than 10 metres over his closest opponent and snared gold medal of the
event with the timing of 15 minutes and 04.85 seconds.
His scintillating form placed him in a lead of almost fourteen seconds over Ledwith, who stepped on the victory stand for silver medal by touching the wall in a time of 15 minutes and 18.70 seconds.
The silver medallist was followed by Wesley Elford of STEV, who stayed almost eight seconds behind his former finisher and completed his race in a time of 15 minutes and 26.79 seconds for bronze medal.
He was chased by James Lichtenfels of AMH, who stayed nearly six seconds away from upsetting the third position holder and settled on the finishing end as fourth best swimmer by reporting 15 minutes and 32.67 seconds.
In the meantime, Caroline Wilson of WILL seized gold medal of the Women’s 1650yard freestyle. Wilson cemented her place on the victory stand for gold medal by hitting the wall with the timing of 16 minutes and 40.42 seconds.
She was trailed by Hilary Callen of DEN, who stayed nearly two seconds behind and clocked a time of 16 minutes and 42.61 seconds for silver medal of the event. Wilson’s team-member, Sarah Thompson proved her mettle for bronze medal of the event as she stayed
almost five seconds slower from Callen and submitted 16 minutes and 47.44 seconds for bronze medal.
Emily Ryan of MIT emerged on the finishing wall as fourth best finisher as she ended her race in a time of 16 minutes and 59.05 seconds.
The audience admired ruthless swims of all finalists whereas the podium finishers were invited on the victory stand for their invincible efforts at prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
