Question:

Allergy medicine for horse

My horse is showing allergies to the grass seed in his pasture. Everywhere the grass seed touches him, he itches and sometimes breaks out. Today he came in with a swollen eye and clear discharge. An infection or scratch has beel ruled out, so it seems his swollen eye is due to allergies. I have never used any allergy meds for a horse, so can anyone recommend one that would be good? Thanks!

  1. my horse is alleric to 24 things, including the four most common types of grass, all flies, and a whole bunch of other stuff. we have him on allergy shots, which are given once a month under the skin (i give them myself) to desensitize his immune system to the perpetrator. it has worked so well with him! he still reacts a bit, but not nearly as bad as he did. so i would talk to your vet about that as a possible solution. another thing that may help is a low dose antihystemine given to him daily in his feed. its relatively inexpensive and can help reduce reactions. but dont use the shots and the antihystemine at the same time; one will cancel the other out. as a previous poster said, i would cover him up as mich as possible, and keep him OUT of the problem grass. if he is reacting by simply touching the seed, it can tear his insides up if he is eating it! but either way, definately talk to your vet. horses with allergies are rare, but they're out there! =]

  2. ask the vet

  3. Anti Hist is good, but should be used for a long period.

Try mowing the grass, and talking to your Vet about the best medicines.

You can also put a fly mask on his face so he can't hurt his eyes.
