Allison Schmitt captures Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day two – 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim
Allison Schmitt of North Baltimore captured gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle on day two of the 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Friday, May 11.
The 21-year-old Schmitt, who qualified into the playoff as second best swimmer, made a significant improvement in her pace and occupied gold medal of the discipline.
With her epic start, she gained a comfortable lead over her challengers and sprinted her way towards the finishing end for gold medal by producing a time of 1 minute and 57.38 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Dana Vollmer of California Aquatics, who stayed full body length behind and tapped the finishing end for second position by clocking a time of 1 minute and 58.62 seconds.
The 24-year-old Vollmer stayed just 0.23 seconds ahead of Kathryn Hoff, who secured her third fastest qualification spot by posting a time of 1 minute and 58.85 seconds for bronze medal.
The third position holder was chased by Shannon Vreeland, who failed to secure her top qualifying position and ended fourth in the 200m discipline by submitting a time of 1 minute and 59.01 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed an immaculate effort of Trojan Swim Club’s Ricky Berens, who proved his mettle for gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly by reporting a time of 1 minute and 47.32 seconds.
The champion was trailed by 14-time Olympic gold medallist, Michael Phelps of North Baltimore, who hit the finishing end for silver medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 48.01 seconds.
Similarly, Phelps remained 1.02 seconds faster from Charlie Houchin of Unattached-PC, who proved his eligibility for bronze medal of the discipline by touching the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 49.03 seconds.
The bronze medallist remained just 0.29 seconds ahead of Conor Dwyer of Lake Forest SC-I, who finished his swim in fourth best place by producing a time of 1 minute and 49.32 seconds.
In addition, the position holders received awards and accolades for their notable efforts in the 200m event at the prize ceremony of the championship.
