Allison Schmitt captures Women’s 400m freestyle gold: Day one – USA Swimming Grand Prix Series
American freestyle veteran, Allison Schmitt demonstrated her skills by capturing the title of Women’s 400m freestyle on foremost day of the 2011-12 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series on Friday, January 13.
The competition is second stage of seven-stop series and is being conducted at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The 21-year-old Schmitt, who won a bronze medal in the Women’s 100m freestyle earlier, elevated her efforts in the mediocre distant freestyle event. Schmitt made no mistake in the 400m swim and shattered all hopes of her competitors in a ruthless manner.
North Baltimore’s Schmitt sustained her fastest qualification spot throughout the race and climbed the podium for gold medal by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 05.90 seconds. She was 1.99 seconds ahead of her toughest competitor, Jazmin Carlin, who surfaced
on the finishing end with a second fastest time of 4 minutes and 07.89 seconds.
The 21-year-old Carlin remained prominently away from her following swimmer, Chloe E Sutton of Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Team, who clocked a time of 4 minutes and 10.66 seconds for bronze medal.
Next was the same event in Men’s category, where Canada’s Ryan Cochrane showed no mercy to his fellow swimmers and grabbed title of the race by submitting a time of 3 minutes and 50.66 seconds.
The champion remained almost one second ahead of Fast Swim Team-C’s Michael P Klueh, who hit the wall with an effort of 3 minutes and 51.23 seconds for silver medal. The 24-year-old Klueh remained just two strokes faster from Charles G Houchin, who was on
a verge of defeating him., but he managed to escape.
Houchin stayed 0.54 seconds behind his foregoing competitor and settled on the concluding wall as third fastest swimmer with a timing of 3 minutes and 51.77 seconds.
The crowd admired scintillating efforts of all participants in the distant freestyle event while the podium finishers received accolades for their invincible efforts at medal ceremony of the championship. In addition, the championship will continue for two
more days to wrap up all swimming events in Men’s and Women’s category.
