Allison Schmitt pockets Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day two – ConocoPhillips National Championships
North Baltimore’s Allison Schmitt pocketed the title of Women’s 200m freestyle on the subsequent day of the 2011 ConocoPhillips National Championships on Wednesday, August 3, in Palo Alto, California. The USA Long Course meet is a seven-day competition,
taking place at the Aquatic Centre of Stanford University.
The 21-year-old Schmitt remained undisputed in the four-lap freestyle event, by submitting a time of 1 minute and 57.94 seconds. Her time was 0.92 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Catherine Breed of Pleasanton Seahawks, who stepped on the podium
for silver medal, by posting a time of 1 minute and 58.86 seconds.
Breed was trailed by Alyssa Anderson of Tucson Ford Deal, who remained 0.45 seconds away from claiming the silver medal and settled on the podium, by reporting in a third fastest time of 1 minute and 59.31 seconds.
Schmitt was also the freestyle swimmer of 4*200m freestyle relay team, which won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In addition, Schmitt’s phenomenal efforts also made her part of the distant freestyle relay team, which captured the gold
medal at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
Anderson was only 0.15 seconds ahead of her strongest rival, Chelsea Nauta of Athens Bulldog Swim Club, who transpired as the fourth fastest swimmer, by producing a time of 1 minute and 59.46 seconds. In the meantime, the arena witnessed an aggressive effort
of Dagny Knutson of A.S.K. Swim-ND, who remained just 0.03 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and surfaced as the fifth finest swimmer, with a timing of 1 minute and 59.49 seconds.
She was followed by Nauta’s team-mate, Megan Romano, who claimed sixth fastest spot in a time of 1 minute and 59.56 seconds. Moments later, Lauren Perdue of University of Virginia and Lindsay Gendron of Tennessee Aquatic secured the seventh and eighth fastest
spots of the swim, with timings of 1:59.69 and 2:00.02 minutes, respectively.
Furthermore, the position holders collected their medals after the completion of all swimming events, while the arena applauded for the commendable efforts of all swimmers.
