Allison Schmitt shatters Olympic record of Women’s 200m freestyle – London Olympic Games
Allison Schmitt of USA shattered the Olympic record of the Women’s 200m freestyle on fourth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, July 31.
Schmitt, who qualified into the playoff as strong contender for gold medal, stunned the aquatic crowd with her gold finish in a new Olympic mark. She showed no leniency to her opponents from the start and rushed her way towards the finishing wall for the crown.
The 22-year-old Schmitt remained two body lengths ahead of her subsequent rival and stepped on the victory stand for gold medal with the timing of 1 minute and 53.61 seconds.
Her title-claiming effort remained 1.97 seconds ahead of Camille Muffat of France, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 55.58 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Bronte Barratt of Australia, who stayed only 0.23 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and proved her mettle for bronze medal of the discipline by submitting a time of 1 minute and 55.81 seconds.
Barratt was chased by Schmitt’s teammate, Missy Franklin, who stayed just 0.01 seconds slower from her over the finishing end and earned fourth position with the timing of 1 minute and 55.82 seconds.
Similarly, Franklin was trailed by Federica Pellegrini of Italy, who suffered a deficit of one body length from her former finisher and finished her race in fifth best place with the timing of 1 minute and 56.73 seconds.
Sixth fastest spot of the event was secured by Veronika Popova of Russian Federation, who was 0.52 seconds apart and clocked a timing of 1 minute and 57.25 seconds.
Popova was followed by Caitlin McClatchey of Great Britain, who stayed 0.0.35 seconds behind and reported a time of 1 minute and 57.60 seconds for seventh position.
Last position of the 200m event was obtained by Kylie Palmer of Australia, who was 0.08 seconds slower and posted a time of 1 minute and 57.68 seconds.
In addition, Schmitt expressed happiness over her gold claiming efforts after the session.
