Allister Coetzee likely to replace Peter de Villiers as Springboks coach - Rugby News
According to reliable sources, Stormers coach Allister Coetzee, could replace the Springboks’ head coach, Peter de Villiers, at the end of this year. South African Rugby Union (SARU) has expressed its consent to hire Coetzee after the departure of De Villiers,
whose current contract with the union will come to an end on December 31. Rassie Erasmus is the other name echoing in the circles of SARU to be named as head coach of the national side. The sources claimed November 2 that the quation is favouring Stormers
coach as Rassie is likely to be given some other key role.
The current coach of Springboks, Peter de Villiers, have been serving South African Rugby Union since 2007, after the departure of their World Cup winning coach Jake White but his future with the teams seems to be at an end after a poor show in Tri-Nations
Cup and World Cup of this year. The Boks have cut a sorry figure in both tournaments played within the last three months.
Peter de Villiers could guide his side to just one victory in Tri-Nations Cup 2011, after four outings and yet again his team was knocked out from the quarter-final stages. De Villiers performance came under stern criticism and their sports minister rebuked
him in extremely harsh words after an early debacle in the world showpiece.
Talking about the current prevailing situation regarding the appointment of new Boks coach, Gary Gold the assistant of De Villiers, said that, “I won’t comment on speculation as you hear so many stories. I will find that out at Friday’s Saru President’s
Forum meeting in Johannesburg (where all 14 provincial presidents will meet with the Saru executive committee to discuss various issues). In fact, I will ask at the meeting what the situation is with the process of the Springbok coach job.”
The assistant coach further said that, “It is a very sensitive thing. We have not discussed our coaches’ positions because I don’t know if they are going to apply for any other posts or if they will be approached.”
SARU President’s Forum meeting is going to be held on Friday, November 4, where the issue will come under discussion.
