http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allister-John-de-Winter-c43773 keen to retain McDermott’s philosophy – Cricket News Update
Temporarily appointed Australian bowling coach, Allister de Winter, has expressed his intent to retain the philosophy and methods which had been practiced by previous coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Craig-John-McDermott-c51704 as he prepares to work with the national side for their upcoming
ODI tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013.
“I share similar views to Craig, certainly about attacking the top of off stump a lot more in Test cricket,” he told
ESPNcricinfo. “One-day cricket will be a little different, but keeping it simple as Craig has in the past 12 months has paid dividends and I think we'd be mad to move too far away from that sort of philosophy.”
The post for the national team’s bowling coach was vacated in May this year when McDermott announced his retirement, claiming Australia’s busy schedule in the upcoming months was the reason behind his decision.
Out of the potential new candidates for the position, Pakistani pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Waqar-Younis-Maitla-c96193 and de Winter (assistant coach of the Tasmanian Tigers) have emerged as the most likely options. De Winter appears to have an edge as has been granted a trail tour by being
taken on as a temporary bowling coach for the Aussies upcoming tour of England.
Speaking about his plans for the tour, the 44-year-old maintained that he would be adopting a simple strategy, similar to the one put into effect by McDermott.
“It's about keeping things as simple as possible, mechanically as well as tactically ... it's purely about executing the plans that we put in place,” he said, going on to observe that the Aussies had at times been unable to adhere to their plans, particularly
in Test matches, against better teams such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 and England.
Australia’s most devastating Test loss of late has been their Ashes 2010/2011 defeat on home soil, which eventually cost them their ranking as the ICC’s top Test team. However, some hard work over the year, such as the team’s 4-0 win against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in the
Border-Gavaskar trophy in January this year, in addition to their recent 2-0 (3) defeat of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Devi-Chand-Worrel-c53918 trophy this April, enabled them to climb up to number 3 on the ICC’s Test rankings.
Their performance in the limited-overs format shows an even more promising picture – the Aussies are currently ranked the top ODI team, and de Winter will be looking to make sure they maintain that position as they prepare to face http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 in a one-off ODI,
before going into a 5-match one-day series against England.
Particular challenges the interim bowling coach faces are the handling of young inexperienced pacers such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RJ-Harris-c2330 in order to keep them on
track.
