Australia’s new fast-bowling coach Allister de Winter on Tuesday shared that the left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson remains in the mix for a Test recall.
Johnson, 30, has not played a Test match since November 2011, lack of consistency being a major reason behind his snub. The Queensland fast bowler has largely been upstaged by fellow pacers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Pattinson-c1653.
However, de Winter has said that Johnson’s recent form in the Sheffield Shield is being closely observed by the selectors and could earn him a recall into the national Test side.
“He's probably still in the mix,” de Winter, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s newly appointed bowling coach, told reporters at Bellerive. “I think he's started the season really well in terms of Sheffield Shield cricket. He bowled very well in our tour to Dubai in the one-day tournament.”
Johnson started his career in an impressive style, picking up 137 wickets from 30 appearances in the first two years of his Test career. Considering his startling performances in 2008 and 2009, the left-armer was regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world. But inconsistency plagued the second half of his five-year career. The left-armer picked up just 13 wickets from 199.5 overs bowled in six Tests in 2011.
But de Winter has backed the left-arm quick to come good.
“He's in a really good headspace,” said the 44-year-old former Tasmanian pacer. “He's really fit and he's bowling as well as he has for quite a long time. It's great to have him back in the mix and it gives us a great choice when it comes to selection, particularly with his left-arm bowling,” he added further.
Meanwhile, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834 speedster has said that his days of waywardness are behind him and he is prepared for the longest format of the game, should he get another chance this summer. However he doubts that the opportunity will come against South Africa next month.
Australia are scheduled to play a three-Test home series against Test No. 1 South Africa, commencing at Brisbane on November 9. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, in which the Kangaroos will play the Islanders in three Tests and a limited-overs affair.
