Question:

Almost 21 weeks pregnant and looking for a job.

I'll be 21 weeks pregnant on Saturday and I'm hoping to find a job to supplement my income until the baby comes. I can no longer do my home child care due to the hours and will be shutting it down at the end of August.

Anyway, there are a few places at our local mall that are hiring part-time evening and weekend employees, and I was going to apply. It will be perfect. I stay home with our daughter in the day, and my husband finishes work at 2pm, so he can stay home with her in the evenings, and we don't have to find alternative care for her. I know that it can be difficult to find a job during pregnancy, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to increase my chances of being hired at one of these places? My belly is big enough already that hiding it will be hard, but not impossible, but I don't want to be dishonest either.

Any advice?

  1. There are laws protecting you from "not" being hired for being pregnant.

  2. hmmm look 4 an esy job such as on MCDonalds, Burger King, you get the point...

  3. i would think just being honest would be best, make sure you let the companies know that you will be planning to continue working after the baby is born and that you have things worked out regarding child care so they won't need to worry about that. I definitely wouldn't try to hid the pregnancy you NEED your prospective employers support and understanding, remember if you are in the U.S. the Family Medical Leave Act will NOT apply to you because you need to have been working for your company at least a year, so if you don't want fired or laid off when you take time off for maternity leave you need your boss to be prepared

  4. I'd suggest getting a job that's disposable like McDonalds or something because you are going to need to take at least a couple weeks off to recoup from the birth and in that time you could try to find something more perminant that you'll enjoy more, even though its part time.

  5. well i would just take my chances and apply for a few jobs at a time and then if one works out cancel the others

  6. My guess is that if you're looking for a job on a part-time temporary basis the employer hiring you will already know that. Mall jobs are high-turn over anyway, they are used to hiring people in your type of situation. I honestly don't think you'll have a hard time finding an employer. Maybe you should apply at a temp agency. Since those jobs can be part-time and are temporary already maybe that would be perfect for you! I know lots of temps who work part-time in the evening through those agencies.

Is it impossible to not work? Working opposite shifts like that with the hubby can be a real strain on even the best of relationships. Good luck to you! That is always hard work!

  7. You'd be having the baby around the holidays- the most critical time for a retail job.  I think that's going to make it harder.

I wouldn't try to hide the pregnancy just really push the point that you'd want the job after the baby, as well.
