Alomar avails 2011 Caribbean Series Hall of Fame recognition
It hasn’t been long since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven got picked by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America to graduate in this year’s class of Hall of Fame. The two legendary ball players made their way to the books of history in glorious fashion,
as they availed more than 75% of the votes in the ballot to make it to this point in their illustrious career.
The two will join Pat Gillick in their trip to Cooperstown in the summer, when they will be inducted into the National Hall of Fame. However, for Alomar, the glory doesn’t stop there. In a recent news announcement, the Puerto Rican, along with two other
ball players was inducted into the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame.
Alomar, joined by Carlos Baerga, Candy Maldonado and Luis De Leon, will avail the honours soon as the four stars will make their presence at the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, this year. Alomar has featured in the series 24 times for his country, and his
batting average has been around .337. Furthermore, he’s smashed 4 homers and has also driven in 19 runs for his team. The player has been credited with the latest series. He threw a ceremonial first pitch, before the game between Puerto Rico and Venezuela
began, recently.
Baerga participated in 7 Caribbean series, totalling 38 games in appearances. In his tenure in the tournament, he maintained a batting average of .296. Furthermore, he smashed 6 home runs, drove 23 runs for his country and scored 25 runs for the National
Team.
Baerga is also hailed to have played parts of 14 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamond-backs and Washington Nationals.
"Roberto, for me, is one of the best five players ever in the game," said Baerga. "Robbie won three World Series and all those Gold Gloves. Robbie is a special guy. We were roommates at the start of our career, and I know he was capable of doing special
things."
Maldonado, on the other hand, maintained a good batting average in his career appearances for the Caribbean series. In 19 games, his average stayed up on .333. He smashed 5 home runs and drove in 17. Candy played 15 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers,
San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers.
"This is the greatest accomplishment of my career," Maldonado said. The elevated player went on to say that he never expected to be inducted in the Caribbean Hall of Fame, and expressed his desire for accompanying the likes of Carlos and De Leon.
