Alomar credits catcher perspective in bid for Cubs’ Managerial position
Sandy Alomar Jr. is not the favorite man to take the charge for the Chicago Cubs in 2012. The top level management is in search for their team’s new manager and Alomar is one of the four shortlisted individuals in the mix. The six time All – Star player
has immense experience and his years of coaching experience will count if he takes the mound. The former catcher talked to the press after his interview with the club on Friday, November 11.
The current Cleveland Indians bench coach was a catcher in the Major Leagues for 20 years. He had the privilege to play under ten mangers, seven of which went on to the World Series. The 45-year-old has been thinking of managing since 2001 and that aim seems
to be at the critical point of time. Alomar immediately became a catching instructor after he retired from the game in 2007.
Now the former baseball player is hoping for the position to go his way. He thinks his catcher’s perspective plays an important role in the management position and he was open to talk about it with the media and the press.
"You have to make moves on the fly, you call games on the fly," he said. "You don't have time to make decisions. You have to react and make decisions according to the plan you put in before the game. You visualize the whole field. Sometimes you even manage
guys on the field.
"You're the only guy facing the other players, and you're the only guy who can see what the defensive positioning is," he said. "Having that in play, I think it helps a catcher make a lot of decisions, and it happens fast. I think that's why a lot of catchers
have the ability to manage."
The Cubs are desperately looking for a way to break their bad spell of not reaching the World Series. The last time they won the accolade was back in 1908. With our a hundred years passed, fans are hoping to sign on a manager that could break the curse and
bring glory back to Wrigley Field in Chicago.
