Alonso Aims for World Championship
The Formula One season is heading towards its business end as some of the leading drivers in the championship are staking their claims at this year’s championship with the ultimate prize in motorsport up for grabs.
Leading the pack is Lewis Hamilton but there are others who are closely following in with Spanish Fernando Alonso lurking in 47 points adrift of the British driver.
Despite the stranglehold of Hamilton, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso firmly believes he can claw his way back into contention for the World Championship.
The Spaniard has had a mixed season this year, and despite being at the forefront in most of the races he is yet to taste success
In all he has had five podium places to his credit yet has failed to go past the third spot while Hamilton and his McLaren team mate Jenson Button, who is second, have won two races each.
The Formula One’s fanfare continues this week with Hockenheim set to stage the German Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Ferrari duo of Alonso and team mate Felipe Massa is placed at the fifth and eighth in the standings.
The duo has become the forgotten pair but in the circuit this year as they face stiff competition from Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who lie third and fourth respectively.
Alonso is determined to get his due back before the season runs out
"We saw this year you can have two or three bad races or two or three good races, it can change completely the picture of the championship," he said.
"We arrive now after two bad races, with not many points, but I think sooner or later we will arrive in a good moment.
"We need to take the maximum from our car, do two or three podiums in a row, and I'm sure with the new points systems, we will be fighting for the championship very soon".
Alonso was third in the last race at Silverstone and thinks that his car is coming to terms with the demands of various tracks around the world and his car’s performance has surprised him just like the rest of the followers of the sport.
"The performance of the car in Silverstone was very good, a good surprise for us," he said.
"The performance of the car in Valencia was very good so two different circuits and the performance of the car was good enough to be on the podium and fighting to be in a good position on the podium.
"In the remaining races, we are very optimistic. We are bringing in some new developments in the car in the coming races as well so we will not stop, we will fight while it's possible".
Meanwhile Hamilton starts German Grand Prix with a clear 12 points lead against compatriot Button, as the British duo sit at the top of the standings
On the other hand Alonso thinks that the Hockenheim circuit is ideally suited to a driver with his capabilities and he is expecting very little between all the cars on the grid.
"The circuit is not too complicated, the times will be very short, the gap between the cars.
His team mate Fellipe Massa has had an ordinary season with a record of just a single podium season in 2010.
He secured a second place at the Australian Grand Prix in March; he is currently in the eighth spot 78 points adrift of Hamilton
The Brazilian however, hopes that a turnaround is inevitable "For sure, I'm not happy like I'm supposed to be. The beginning of the season was not like I expected," Massa said.
