Alonso believes changes will make 2011 more competitive
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso had one of the best seasons of his career this year but unfortunately, the Spaniard was unable to secure the title as he was just 4 points short of the 2010 champion Sebastian Vettel.
Team Ferrari was unable to score points consistently in 2010 as they had a very poor first half of the 2010 Formula 1 season even though they secured a 1-2 in the very first race. After that, the team’s performance stumbled vitally and until the German Grand
Prix, Ferrari was more like the worst of the best as McLaren and Red Bull were constantly challenging each other.
As always, Ferrari was left with no option but letting their best man win via team orders. However this time, it was justified as Felipe Massa was nowhere near the top running drivers and if the team did not let Fernando win, they would’ve forced themselves
out of drivers’ title run. Therefore the team decided to ask Felipe to back out and let the Spaniard win the German Grand Prix in order to secure their title run.
This decision was like the turning point for Ferrari but even though Ferrari dominated the second half, Red Bull’s RB6 was clearly the fastest car on track and as a result, Fernando was unable to cope up with Sebastian at the grand finale in Abu Dhabi.
However, Fernando Alonso believes that Red Bull won’t have a clear advantage in 2011 mainly because of the rule changes.
“Obviously every year normally Formula 1 changes rules to make it more spectacular, to have more overtaking maneuvers and to have a better show,” he said.
According to the latest FIA Regulations Report, teams will be allowed to use movable wings and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) next season and as a result, the number of overtaking opportunities will increase noticeably.
“It's true that in 2011 there are two big changes to the regulations, which is the KERS and the rear wing that we can move when we have an overtaking possibility. I think these two combined give us a speed advantage that is quite big compared to the car
in front,” Fernando added.
It would be interesting to see what the top running teams have in store for us technologically and since Mercedes is expected to challenge McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull for the titles, the expectations for the 2011 Formula 1 season are already sky high.
