Alonso must win by a lead of more than 7 points – Jenson Button
The two time world champion Fernando Alonso bagged 15 points after finishing in 3rd place on the podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix at the legendary Interlagos circuit. Fernando was unable to start his weekend on a high note after he qualified
in 5th place behind the McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton and it seemed that the Spaniard was going to struggle in terms of pace on Sunday during the race. However, Ferrari was definitely looking much better than McLaren especially after Fernando took
over Lewis effortlessly.
After taking a look at Ferrari’s performance at Interlagos, Jenson Button thought that Fernando is going very well this season and is definitely the favourite driver for the 2010 championship but his championship will be tainted if the Spaniard does not
win by more than 7 points.
Fernando is trailing Mark Webber by 8 points currently, out which 7 points were gifted to him by Felipe Massa at the German Grand Prix where the Brazilian driver was asked to let his teammate win in order to keep him alive in the 2010 drivers’ championship.
However, Ferrari was fined $100,000 by the FIA stewards as teams are not allowed to issue team orders. However, the FIA surprisingly did not take any further action after the hearing that took place in September.
The Spaniard will win the title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend if he scores 15 points or more. Which means that Fernando will have to finish in at least 3rd place in order to secure the title. However, Jenson Button believes that the
Spaniard is going to be showered with criticism if he doesn’t win the championship by more than 7 points.
After another disastrous race at Interlagos, the defending World champion is now out of the championship race and it seems that he will have to work for his teammate at the final race in Abu Dhabi in order to keep the championship within the team.
“I just hope if he wins it then he does so by more than seven points. Some will be disappointed with what happened at Hockenheim and question whether he deserves it. I don't care who wins it really,” Button told the
Media.
Jenson Button believes that the strategy Red Bull is applying regarding its drivers is the best way of achieving both championships as both of the drivers push without forcing themselves to race for the team rather than themselves.
“I like the way Red Bull let their drivers fight. That is the way it should be. You fight all the way through your career to get into F1, to get into a good car, to win races,” Button added.
However, it seems that Red Bull has a lesser chance than Ferrari at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Alonso already has an advantage over the two Red Bull drivers and Lewis Hamilton and since Fernando is going at such a good pace since the beginning
of the second half of this season, it seems that Red Bull will have a tough time this weekend and the only way they can win the championship is if Alonso makes a mistake or Lewis Hamilton suddenly finds the pace and at least finishes ahead of the Spaniard
in Abu Dhabi.
“If you still have a chance of winning the world championship, you should be given equal opportunities and it is good to see they have said that is important. I don't know who will win, it is very close. I'd say it is between Mark Webber and Fernando,” said
the reigning world champion.
However, as we all know, Formula 1 is one of the most unpredictable sports and anything can happen in a blink of an eye. Therefore, it will definitely be an exhilarating race and it would be interesting to see what the teams come up with in order to secure
the 2010 drivers’ championship title.
