Alonso optimistic about Ferrari consistency
Ferrari’s glorious victory at the Italian Grand Prix has placed them back in contention for the both the driver's and constructor’s championships, and driver Fernando Alonso is optimistic that the current
track record is a sign that Ferrari will stay in the race until the end.
The 2005-06 Formula One world champion thrilled crowds of tifosi when he battled McLaren’s Jenson Button to take the team’s first home victory since 2006. Now third in the driver’s championship with 166
points, the 29 year-old Spaniard believes that the F10 vehicle has found its momentum and will perform podium-calibre finishes for the remaining races.
Alonso writes in his official Ferrari blog, “Despite failing to score in Spa, where the accident on the first lap weighed heavily like a stone, Ferrari and I have scored more points than anyone else in
these last four races. That makes us even more confident and the fact these results came on tracks with very different characteristics to one another, confirms that our car is pretty versatile.”
Indeed, it is partly Ferrari’s energetic ability to bounce back from lacklustre performances which has impressed fans and critics alike, and Alonso himself has exhibited a gutsy demeanor when it comes
to redemption. “At Spa, things had not gone well, so it was hard to say beforehand what we might really be capable of,” he wrote. “However, we knew that, as long as we did our best, we would be in with a chance and that's how things turned out. Now our aim
must be to try and do the same in the final five races of the championship.”
Ferrari was favoured second to McLaren in predictions for the Monza race, with the latter team’s vehicle being better suited to the characteristics of the historic track. Yet Alonso managed to secure pole
position after cracking Button’s qualifying time, and win an intense duel with the Briton near the end of the race, sealing a dramatic victory. Teammate Felipe Massa followed in third. Revelling in the atmosphere of the vibrant tifosi, Alonso enjoyed what
he called one of the most memorable Grand Prix wins of his career. He later praised the Ferrari crew for their excellent craftsmanship, stating, “It was nice to once again lift the winner's trophy in front of the people who had made the victory possible, starting
with the guys who did the pitstop.”
Though Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali has insisted that his team will stay grounded after victory celebrations have waned, Ferrari and their fanbase are more than justified with feeling confident about
going into the next race in Singapore.
