Alonso revs for perfection in Abu Dhabi:
The pursuit of perfection is what separates the expert from the novice, the artist from the dilatant, the Formula One Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso from the rest of his competition.
Indeed, as the final showdown for the Driver’s Championship revs up this weekend in Abu Dhabi, Alonso’s goal is to out-pace his chief Red Bull rivals, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, and definitively win the title without the nagging need for any nerdy
point calculations.
Enjoying an eight and 15 point lead over Webber and Vettel respectively, there are a plethora of permutations and combinations that would allow Alonso to take the championship even if he falls short of winning the race. However, that would not be the Ferrari
driver’s ideal choice.
Given how close the 2010 F1 season has been so far, Alonso acknowledges that the Red Bull duo will be doing their utmost to thwart his ambitions. Indeed, at the Interlagos Grand Prix last Sunday, Alonso trailed Vettel and Webber, who came in first and second
place, clinching the Constructors’ Championship for their team. Despite Red Bull’s stubborn resistance throughout this current season, the Ferrari driver is confident he will bring down the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.
"We can do it, even if we know our principal opponents are very strong,” Alonso said. “So far, perhaps apart from one race, their's has been the best car on every type of circuit. That still doesn't mean we expect to be beaten," he declared.
To achieve his ends, Alonso will need what he described as “a perfect weekend” in Abu Dhabi. "Our approach hasn't changed for this all-important race. We know that if we get everything perfectly right, then we will have the chance to reach the target that
we set ourselves at the beginning of the season," the Ferrari driver said.
Alonso’s rise to the head of the F1 pack has been nothing short of miraculous. Although winning the season-opener in Bahrain, he struggled throughout the first half of the championship. It was only in Korea that he managed to mount his impressive offensive,
coming back from a 47-point deficit to lead the standings.
As the final race of the season gears up on the Yas Marina circuit this coming weekend in Abu Dhabi, the eyes of the F1 world will be watching to see if Alonso’s drive for perfection will be surpassed by the Red Bull team’s desire to stop him.
