  1. If you're looking to get an alpaca as a pet, most breeders will sell a pair of wethered (castrated) males for a decent price.  There are many more pet quality males than anything else, and a pair will usually go for around $1,000-1,500.  Show quality alpacas can sell for huge money - $15,000-60,000 or more per animal.  Too expensive for me!

Alpacas are a herd animal and need a companion.  One by itself will be very nervous and skittish.  They tend to be a very docile animal, so they would be at the bottem of the pecking order in a mixed herd.

Alpacas are in the camelid family, and their care is very similar to llamas.  There are books available at your local feed supply store that are specifically on caring for alpacas, and any breeder will probably recommend what type of feed, routine veterinary care, dietary supplements and special requirements these animals need.

They do require shearing at least once yearly, and hooves need to be trimmed regularly.

Your best bet is going to be to contact a breeder in your area (I live in Ohio, and there's alpaca farms EVERYWHERE!)  Let them know you are considering getting a couple and ask to come out for a farm visit.  Most breeders are very accomodating and will probably give you a tour and some basic information, and you would also have a chance to see what animals they have for sale.

    Hope this helps!
