Do we know of any stars that are less than a light year from each other? How close can they get?

  1. The stars which make up star clusters, either open or globular, are much closer together than this.

  3.   When stars and satellite systems merge towards the galactic center they would get closer together and eventually crash into each other.

  4. Binary stars orbit each other and even exchange gases.

  5. Yes there are such stars. Stars in some globular clusters can be a few light days apart. The central bulge of our galaxy is also far more densely populated than our part.

I should add that such environments are probably not propitious for life. It's the fact that we live in a part of the galaxy, where stars are so sparsely distributed, that has probably facilitated the evolution of complex life.

  6. the problem with stars is the gravitational pull, and yes of course this universe is full of those farther and closer they are jsut labeled differently

as in novas. supernovas, blackholes...ect... it takes all types.

but there are planets out there that HAVE more than one sun, though they may NOT be able to sustain life as we know it.

its easier to go to the library or look up nova or national geographic and those places can explain better.

we are jsut lucky we have the sun, as a star in the right spot to create and sustain life.

    hope htis helps.

  7. Research binary stars.

  8. sure. look at teh stars in star clusters, especially in globulars.

run the numbers on tau ceti and epsilon eridani - same distance from us, same part of the sky. they are close to each other. for fun, figure out how close, and how bright they appear in each other's sky.
