Alpha considered for the Classic says Kiaran McLaughlin
The 3-year-old Bernardini colt, Alpha, suffered a major setback in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing, when he finished a dismal sixth, and got beaten by 4 ¼ lengths to winner Handsome Mike.
It was feared after the race that trainer Kiaran McLaughlin might go for lighter races after Alpha’s only blemish since the Kentucky Derby back in May, but that would’ve been cruel on the colt, who has shown immense character and progress after finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby.
Alpha bounced back to claim the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on 28 July, 2012, and continued his good run of form at Saratoga and followed up with a dead-heat finish with Golden Ticket to partially claim the Grade 1 Travers Stakes a month later.
Out of Nijinsky II mare Munnaya, Alpha proved empty from the quarter pole to the finish when he tried to go for the lead in the Pennsylvania Derby, and it proved to be too much in the end.
“When the guy moved him back he got mad and it caused us to break a touch slow, get squeezed, then he got keen,” McLaughlin said. “He wanted to be there close to the lead and then he went to the inside and couldn’t get out of the inside. I was shocked to see he only got beat [4 1/4] lengths.”
Despite the loss, McLaughlin is adamant on the fact that Alpha will run in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, a race that has been eyed for the colt since after the Kentucky Derby.
On the other hand, the winner of the Pennsylvania Derby, Handsome Mike, has been reported to have come out of the race in good order.
The 19 to 1 longshot of the Pennsylvania Derby vied outside the first turn, and through the final turn, he recaptured the lead, and extended his margin well off the inside in the final furlong.
Handsome Mike will likely be considered for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile said owner, Paul Reddam.
The word is that Kiaran McLaughlin will be making a huge mistake sending Alpha to the Classic, especially on the back of his sixth place finish against a not so fast field
