Alpine 6.5" Type R components, which amp(s)?

I want to get some Alpine SPR-17S (6 1/2" component speakers, rated 110 watts rms) because the ones I have right now are pretty much blown and dont sound good anymore.

Right now I currently have 2x Clarion APX2120 (rated at 60 watts rms per channel - 2 channels each). I was wondering if I should get an Alpine PDX-4.100 to power the Type Rs?

I have heard that having too little power (like from the clarion amps) will make alot of distortion sounds, but at the same time I have also heard that having an amp that has a power to match that of the speakers will cause the tweeters to pop. Don't the manufacterers make the component speakers so both the mids and tweeters can handle the rated rms power?

  1. The PDX-4.100 should power them good without popping them, but it would depend on if you're going to replace both sets or just one. You can be a little under the RMS # without distortion. That amp should sound good with the SPR-17s, if replacing both sets and it is hooked up properly.

  2. the PDX is a fantastic amp and would work very well, and reduce the anoyyance of multiple amplifiers, but i'd bet that your clarion amps will do just fine and distortion wont be a problem. too little power is worse for speakers, but usually that is a problem when hooking components up to a factory or even aftermarket head unit. , for kicks, i tried running the apline SPS 17A components off my alpine HU, and i could barely get past a listenable volume without distrotion.  these headunits put out 18-25 watts MAX per channel.  60watts is way different and it'd be worth trying and saving the hundreds the PDX will cost you, i bet you wont bother with a new amp.

i hope to be putting my 5 1/4 R components up to my alpine F450 at 70w a channel, they can handle more, but i bet i'll be more than fine.
