Hi, I'm in China at the moment - I plan to be for about the next 6 months. I really want to learn the language, but after a couple of weeks, I've realized how difficult it is. I think I am going to need to settle in a place.

I was wondering, maybe I should get a job - not because I need the money, but because it would put me directly with chinese people and i could practice.

I was thinking about teaching english, i hear they give you free accom plus they will give you free chinese lessons. The perks alone is worth it, but I'm not sure how I go about doing it? Do I just call up some of the unis and ask them? What is the procedure?

Although a degree is not required, but you need to be a native speaker from US/UK/Aust, and a certificate like TESL/TEFL. Most of these certification classes are offered in the US/UK/Aust. Some you can take it online. Check out the source links.
