Alter beats Archbishop Hoban 3-0: High School Volleyball news
The Alter boys volleyball team was able to defeat Archbishop Hoban in the final of the Division II Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association state championship on Sunday. Not only was Walter able to win the match, they handed out a defeat to Hoban in
a clean sweep.
It did not seem as if last year’s champions, Hoban, could put up much of a fight against Alter by looking at the final set scores that stood at 25-16, 25-22 and 25-16. However, the Knights had all the right elements that led them to win their first ever
championship title in this particular tournament. According to Keaton Pieper of the Knights, his team had been working hard for a period of four years in order to achieve the title win that they now have under their belt.
The resolve of the Alter team showed in the way they started the opening set of the match by taking the lead at 3-1. This did the trick and kept Hoban under pressure from the start of the game. As a result, Hoban was not able to pull itself together sufficiently
well and never took the lead at any point in the first set of the game. Consequently, it was only a matter of time before the Knights sealed the deal on the opening set by a comfortable margin of 25-16. Chuck Eisenhauer of the Knights played an important role
by giving his team an early advantage by posting kills.
Hoban did not let the loss of the first set rattle their spirits and they came out in the second set with determination. Hoban was able to challenge the Knights in the second set of the game by making it hard for Alter to gain control. As the set reached
it final stages, Hoban was sitting on a lead of 21-18. However, the Knights had come so far to get upset by a late second set lead so they put on a spurt of speed that took Alter on a 7-1 run and enabled the Knights to win the set at 25-22.
The third set of the match started off with both the Knights and Hoban almost neck to neck with each other. Despite the fact that Hoban did not let the set gey out of their hands for the initial part, the pressure got to them near the end and a lot of ill
timed errors were committed. This provided the right stimulus to the Knights who responded by intensifying their attack and ended up bagging the third set at 25-16.
