I have a friend that is planning to go on a trip to southern Mexico. When he is down there he is planning to learn how to surf. But the problem is that the water down there is kindda warm he does not want to buy a wetsuit top and does not want to rent. So he has asked me to cut my Oneill 3/2 fullsuit in half and cut the sleeves off. He says that after the trip he will return the wetsuit top to me. I was wondering if I could after the trip wear the cut off sleeves/ top and bottom without affecting preformence.

  1. Let me get this straight.  He wants to basically destroy your wetsuit to save himself a few bucks.  A wetsuit vest, which is what he will be turning your full suit into, will cost less than the repair coasts for your wetsuit, not to mention that your wetsuit will most likely never perform the same again even if you got it stitched together.

Tell your friend to get off his wallet and go buy himself his own top.

  2. I really had to read this twice to make sure I read it right... your friend wants you to trash a wetsuit because he's too cheap to buy one...  that is absolutly rediculous.  You bought a full suit to use.  What's gonna happen when you need another? Are you going to shell out $150+ for another just because your friend wanted you to save him $30?    Seriously this is the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.  If my friend asked me this I'd hit him with the idiot stick.  You surf I'm sure you have a rash guard.  Lend him that.  There's absolutly no reason for him to make a vest out of your wettie.  It's southern mexico the water shouldn't even be cold.

Maybe your friend has a good winter coat.  Ask if you can borrow that, cut the sleeves off of it, and then return it after you're done. Maybe that will put what he asked of you into perspective for him.

  3. Honestly, friend or not I wouldn't.  If surfing is something that you like to do and something that you do often, I don't think you should do it.  For one, let's say you did cut the sleaves for him and he gave it back. If you surf often, there is going to come a time where your going to wish you never altered your wet suit because you need long sleeves, because if you didn't need the long sleeves or didn't prefer it, I imagine you would've brought a wet suit with no sleeves or already cut them yourself.  If you wouldn't cut your sleeves for yourself, why destroy your things for some one else.  Your friend really sounds cheap. I see it as, I have a pair of nice jeans and my friend would like to borrow them.  Being 3 inches smaller than me, he would like to hem them to his size, and give them back when he's finished.  Now if I don't like caprees or my jeans a little high I would not do it.  Therefore, if you can't see yourself enjoying your wet suit with cut sleeves then don't do it. Tell your friend to stop being cheap, and buy one of his own! And if he doesn't surf a lot than rent one, if he cant' do that then he doesn't need one! :) Take Care!

  4. Unless you are leaving something out, tell dude to buy a wetsuit. By the way, most surf instruction places provide boards + wetsuits.

If he has the money to take a trip to Mexico, he can buy a wetsuit. Not to mention it seems like all he wants is a chest wetsuit... He might aswell just buy an insulated rash gaurd or something or just go in some trunks.

  5. a neoprene jacket brand new should do the trick, you can buy one for like 60 dollars online
