Question:

Alterations for bridesmaid dress?

I had my dress altered to be taken in and hemmed. I picked it up, took it home and they did make alterations however the dress still touches the floor (barely) with the shoes on and the top piece is still to big. I'm going to take it back. Should I expect them to do it over for free or is this common and should I expect to pay for the alterations again?

  1. Because you left with the garment, you should not expect free alterations.  When picking up an altered item, you should bring the shoes and undergarments you wore when originally fitted at the alterations shop.  ALWAYS try on the dress before leaving for the final time.  If you do not do this and are unhappy with it when you get it home, it is your loss.  Final fittings are designed to check the finished product and address any concerns that may need to be corrected on the spot.  After that, it is on you.  If you try to ask for free alterations with these circumstances you have described, then you are taking advantage of your seamstress.  Her time is worth money.  She has no obligation to give you a freebie because you did not pay attention to detail.

  2. free

  3. Umm....it's kinda hard to say. Everyone does it different. Next time when you take it in and pick it up, see if you can try it on right there so they can see how the dress fits on you.

  4. Oooh, kinda iffy - did you say you were happy with it to take it home? If so, their job was done and you have changed your mind which is not their fault. Therefore, they will probably charge you. They may charge you less though, because you have aleady been before with the same item.

  5. It should be done for free. And you should have tried the dress on before you left the store. I'm surprised they let you leave before trying it on again.
