My grandma is paying 45 dollars a month for home phone service which she barely uses! I looked into vonage, but it was my understanding she needs internet? She obviously doesnt have that. What are some options? She still needs phone service; and a cell phone isn't what she wants

  1. It depends on  where you are. Most land line companies have not been able to compete with the cell phone industry. I have seen local land line phone services for as little as a few dollars a month on bill boards. If Juno has a number in that area, you can still get internet for a few dollars a month. I have unlimited long distance calls for $19 a month on my home phone, but its part of a package, I also have high speed internet and cable TV with 2 tv's, through that company for about $120 a month.  I have seen better deals out there, but the fine print has cost me alot in the past, I am scared to switch. Cell phone fine print is brutal. Over minutes, roaming, international calls, Canada and mexico, and on board ship and late payment policy is barbaric. For what Ive paid for those services in the past 8 years, I could have bought a house. Shop around, but beware of the fine print.

  2. I think SBC has a plan for about 30$ a month for basic service with no frills whatsoever.  Be very specific when signing up for phone service.  Oftentimes, they will sign you up for unnecessary services!

  3. Switch to Comcast.

You can get Internet, TV, AND a phone service for just $90 a month on a certain plan.

But I don't think there is an alternative to a home phone.

  4. call the telco, ask about "lifeline service". it is minimal service, local only, so there are no FCC mandated access fees, and I think that since it is "lifeline" is is exempt from some federal and state taxes.
