Alternation will be rested throughout the season and will return to the races at 5
Pin Oak Stable owned 4-year-old colt, Alternation, will be sidelined for the rest of the season, and will be introduced to racing next season when he is 5, and the farm announced that the colt will be freshened in the facilities of his owner, Josephine Abercrombie in Kentucky, but he will return under the care of his trainer Donnie Von Hemel, who will train the colt until his next start at Oaklawn Park.
The Kentucky bred, Alternation will be held at familiar surrounding throughout the winters, at Oaklawn Park, where he won the Oaklawn’s series for older horses last meet, and went on to win the $100,000 Essex Handicap on 4 February, 2012, over 1 1/16 miles.
Next Up, Donnie Von Hemel pointed Alternation to the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap over 1 1/16 miles, and the son of Distorted Humor came out victorious on 10 March, 2012, to defeat, Tapizar in second and Color Me Blue in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 43.20 seconds.
His final race of the Oaklawn Park spring meet was the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in which, Alternation was stretched out in distance to 1 1/8 miles, but that didn’t faze the runner, as he posted his hat-trick by defeating Ron The Greek in second and Yawanna Twist in third, while he covered the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute and 49.94 seconds.
His good run of form continues outside of Oaklawn Park, as he went on to win the Grade 3 Pimlico Special at Pimlico Race Course, defeating Nehro, and downing the 1 3/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 57.60 seconds on 18 May.
In the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on 16 June, Alternation finished off the board for the first time in five starts, when he finished fifth to winner Ron the Greek, but in his next start he bounced back to win the Governor’s Cup where he defeated Prayer for Relief.
He is currently exiting a sixth place finish in the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup, and has so far amassed $1,047,727 by winning 9 in 16 career starts.
“I feel this is an important time in racing to keep some of the familiar stars on the track,” said Abercrombie. “For that reason, and because I thoroughly enjoy the thrill of competition, I have decided to keep him in training and target some of the top races next year.”
