Question:

Alternative fuel at $3 per gallon: use it?

What do you think is the future of alternative fuel like Bio-diesel? (As an explanation, bio diesel is a fuel that is added to Gasoline, or even used directly as a fuel in cars). I am talking about usage on a long term basis/regular consumer usage.

In view of the sky-high costs of gasoline, would people use bio-fuels if it were available at say $3.00 per gallon (i.e. say $0.75 per litre)?

Or would they be too scared of using an “Alternative” fuel in their cars, much like the GM food scare made people stay away from GM foods for some time?

  1. >>  As an explanation, bio diesel is a fuel that is added to Gasoline,

NO !! Bio-diesel is diesel (just made from used cooking oil).  It CANNOT be added to gasoline engine.

    ====

Currently NO bio-fuel can be used on straight gasoline engine (except Flex-fuel car).

    I would use bio-fuel if

    (1) it would be safe for regular car (E85 = not safe for regular car)

    (2) the cost per mile (not MPG) is cheaper than gasoline.  E85 only gets about 2/3 of MPG compared to gasoline.

    good Luck...

  2. What people are looking at are fuels that have not been in process. look at the country of Brazil. All the cars run on fuel that they grow!!!! Now that is what we need. The oil producers are the ones not giving us the right information. or giving us misdirection. What if we could grow our own fuel at not have us at the mercies of the Arab governments?

Or even look at hydrogen powered cars??? Technology is suppose to grow leaps and bounds every two years , and we are still are using the same basic engines from 1960's????

or should we look at how fat we are. Not physical but as a country. We can have anything we want. from ice cream to bombs. we can loose dependency on foreign oil. Lets open our eyes to new options.

  3. Bio fuels are a dill pickle in your fruit salade that you don't want.

  4. if experts would say that there would be no side effects to cars then i would use it. but if they seemed skeptical i would pass and keep using gasoline.

  5. Every car in Boliva runs on Alcohol produced from sugar cane. Corn is grown in a 180 day cycle. Alcohol can be distilled using inedible sugar from Mexico in the US for less than $ 1.00 a gallon.

During WWII, my friend's dad used alcohol in his car exclusively, because gasoline was not available. My father saw cars that ran on charcoal exhaust gases when in Italy during WWII

Electric cars would be of greater use if the new EESU proves out. However, the new patents were bought by Lockheed for a military use development.

Gasoline is yesterday and an unnecessary opiate of our nation. If we really want the future, we need to get out of the past.

  6. Even better---methane made from composted manure for 10Cents/ gallon US (2.5cents/litre).  They used it when there was a gas shortage after WWII.  You can buy the conversion kit for propane and modify it.

Biofuels are insane when someone dies of starvation in the world every 4 seconds.  It's also stupid to feed livestock 10 pounds of grain to get 1 lb. of meat.

After WWIII starts, we'll all be living like refugees.  It will start when the US invades Iran to feed its own economy GWB will start WWIII

  7. "Alternative fuels" are the biggest load of c**p I've ever heard of.

The truth remains, apart from gasoline and diesel no one is going anywhere.

Furthermore, every "alternative fuel" venture has failed miserably.  Just look at ethanol... Studies have concluded that for every 1 gal. produced, 3 gals. were spent producing it... sounds like a great alternative to me.

Instead of looking for an alternative, we simply need to use the abundance of the natural rescources that we have in this country... then there would be no need for an alternative.

The problem with libs is that they are consumed with "alternatives"

Alternative lifestlyes, alternative fuels, alternative alternatives...
