Question:

Alternative theories to the big bang?

The oscillating universe theory has always been to my liking.

But physics these days is focused on the quantum theories. How do electrons interact? Who cares, we are not electrons.

Anywho, let me know your own personal beliefs.

  1. Quantum theory is extremely relevant to Big Bang theory.

The big problem we currently have with *proving* Big Bang theory is the incompatibility of electromagnetic, nuclear and gravitational forces.  Electromagnet and nuclear forces are unified with quantum theory, but gravitational theory (general relativity) doesn't hold up on the quantum scale.

Essentially, quantum theory is rock solid when things are very small, while relativity is rock solid when things are very large -- but there are times when things are small and massive, when both theories are needed, and anomalies appear.  In the early moments of the universe, or in black holes, are the two prime examples of super small and super dense situations that our current equations don't hold up.  This is why we're on the search for "the theory of everything", which many string theorists believe we're on the verge of discovering.

Essentially, big bang theory is rock solid except for those early moments, when things are very small and very dense, when quantum mechanics and gravity must coexist... and as soon as we discover how to evaluate both simultaneously, we'll gain many answers (not only about the start of the universe, but also regarding many other cosmological mysteries).

  2. I like the oscillating theory as well, it goes in line with life and death As you know creationism is another theory.

  3. its wild but who knows.......maybe each galaxy is a single cell of a much greater human body. For all we know we could be the smallest things that make up something far greater like another human being who then lives on another Earth and so on......lol

  4. In fact, we are electrons.  They may be only a small fraction of our mass, but they alone are responsible for all the chemical properties that make life possible.  Furthermore, without any electrons, your body would fly apart at a good fraction of the speed of light.

The oscillating universe theory is not an alternative to the Big Bang, but rather an addition.  It states that there is expansion, then contraction, collapse, and another Big Bang.

  5. the oscillating universe involves the big bang. think of it as an addition to the big bang.

there are options when it comes to the origin of the universe

    1. the big bang

    2. being wrong

EDIT: and yea, finding out how electrons interact is part of 100% of your everyday life. it determines how strong a material is, how viscous it is, what it reacts with, etc. and possibly most importantly, it gives us electricity.

so essentially, by knowing how electrons interact we have been able to produce everything around you. without that, you would be sitting in a cave beating a lion over the head with a club right now.

  6. Creationism is NOT a theory in the scientific sense. It is completely untestable and has no supporting evidence whatsoever. There are no credible alternative theories to the Big Bang. The only contender was the Steady State and it was soundly demolished by the discovery of the CMBR.

  7. I think the universe is like a branch on a tree. The big bang states the universe once started as an infinitesimal speck and I came up with the idea, what if the universe was once so small it could move through the strings of the string theory. What if our universe is a branch from another universe?

I know its riddled with scientific inaccuracies... But its fun to think about... And besides, I really could care less where the universe came from.

  8. What exactly do you want to know??? Huh????? I am not able to understand your question.

  9. From what iv read (iam new to learing about all this) the big bang seems to stand tall but i mean we humans have thought beleived things before and wev been wrong so who knows

  10. I can't get my head around the big rip/cold death idea.... everything I know of recycles in some way, and I feel the Universe would, too...

as far as another way for it all to start, I'm starting to get into the dimension things.... branes.... ever see an amoeba divide?... that too.... give a human enuff info and he'll come up with some sort of idea of how it started, so there's gobs of those..... which are probable, or possible, or even barely believe-able is the big question!!... but I sure ain't gonna go with the 'God sneezed ' one.....
