Question:

Alternative to frequent dog-walking?

I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building. When I walk outside my door it is into a hallway and you have to take the elevator downstairs, into the parking garage, and around to the dog walk. This is way too much to be doing every 2 hrs. I don't want my dogs peeing on my carpet and I don't want them to be in the kennel all the time. I have a balcony, is there any alternative like a dog litter box or something?

  1. You will LOVE this! http://www.yourpetessentials.com/petloo

  2. Depending on the size of your pup, piddlepads may be an option. This isn't usually a good idea for large breeds, as larger pup, larger piddles and piles. But for smaller breeds can work great.

My 2 chihuahuas are piddlepad trained. Neither are confused as to where to go. They go outside, weather permitting, and on the piddlepad as well. Never willy nilly throughout the house.

  3. I know how you feel because I also live in an apartment (13th floor!) and hate having to get in the elevator and then out of the building and around a few more buildings to get the grassy patch! But I do it for my Jellybean ^_^. It is all worth it because I love her.

Yes, you can use a dog litter box BUT your house is going to smell o_0. I could have done that with Jellybean but I mean dogs are big. They don't p**p small like cats. Your house will reek! That is why I decided I will just continue taking her down. Besides, it forces me to move! I'm really lazy, see, and when Jellybean needs to go I can't say no (otherwise I have to clean up the mess and I don't want that). So I am forced to get off my a*ss and move ^_^

If you think about it, it's a win-win situation.

  4. Well depending on the size of the dog, they will still need exercise however.... you could buy some artificial grass and make an area for them to do their duty on... Make sure to keep it clean though. If you do this make sure to put something under it like plastic or something to keep it from staining the balcony.... You don't want any charges when you move out.

  5. If you don't want to walk your dogs then maybe you shouldn't have gotten them.

  6. you can put one wee wee pad or newspaper in the balcony so he could pee and p**p on them

  7. I find that most dogs who are litter or pad trained are ussually confused and are not fully housebroken.

Besides, you've already started outdoor training.. if you try another method now, you will really confuse your dog!

You could possibly get like a kiddie pool for your balcony and plant grass in it for a potty area.  Be prepared to clean it often tho to prevent your neighbors from complaining about the odor.
