Question:

Alternative to portable air conditioner - little fridge!?

The portable air conditioners have a pipe that needs to be out a window to expel the hot air. I don't have a suitable window. Would another idea be to get a small fridge and leave the door open all the time? This way cold air without much heat produced.

  1. ive actually seen a new type of portable air conditioner..it actually looks like a tower fan which doesnt have to be put in the window..ive included a website for u to check out

  2. will not work.  another bad idea.  only good if you like paying huge electric bills.

  3. No way. The fridge is meant to cool the space inside with the door closed. Just like the AC is meant to cool the room with the doors and windows closed. The exhaust has to always outside the compartment it is meant to cool.

  4. Ha ha, erm, no!!  The motor would then kick in to cool the fridge even more and the motor generates heat.  If you don't believe me, pull out the fridge in your kitchen, feel behind it - toasty warm isn't it?

  5. Yeah..  I have seen a portable room a/c unit also similar to a portable heater.  You should check those out.

  6. Use fans more, they cost little to run, and they create a breeze that can help you feel up to 7 degree cooler. Save energy and money by using ceiling fans and turning off the air conditioning or by turning up the A/C’s temperature a few degrees and letting the fan do the rest.

  7. You haven't thought it through have you! All you would end up with is the same room temperature and a larger electricity bill.

    Doh!

  8. Sorry but no, your just throwing money out the window. An ac unit is specifically designed to cool a designated amount of square footage according to the BTU"s A fridge is designed to only cool the square footage of the inside of it, with the door closed.
