Alternator on gmc jimmy

is it normal that my Alternator is getting hot

YES. It should not be "glowing red"!! but it will get hot to the touch.

that depends on your idea of hot. they do get pretty warm with the engine running right beside them. but, they should not get too excessively hot, and definitely should not glow red ever as someone else mentioned.

They do get warm.. But not excessively hot.. if it is gettin so hot you can't touch it i'd be looking for a replacement as the bearings may be breaking down...
