Question:

Aluminum Jon Boat Question?

I have a aluminum flat bottomed Lowe 1232 Jon boat and it is rated for a maximum of 3 HP. This sounds like an awfully small motor. Is it safe to put a larger motor on like a 5 or 6 HP?

Thanks.

  1. Could do it but a warden could ticket you for the violation

  2. Looked up many jon boat dealers some are rated 3 some 6 call jon boat that makes yours see if the newer 1s have more hp rating> Your call Safety first>

  3. A larger motor could cause the stern to SQUAT when you open the throtle.  This would put you in danger of swamping your jon boat by taking water in over the stern, causing your boat to sink or atleast fill with water.

Do Not exceed the ratings on a small vessel, horse power wise and weight wise.  Boat Safe!
